Culture, Politics and Military Mix

A popular quiz question is: what’s the capital of Australia? If you answered Sydney or Melbourne then it’s time to discover the real answer – Canberra. With Parliament House at its core, Canberra fans out across both sides of Lake Burley Griffin to reveal a diverse mix of museums, restaurants and bars filled with curious tourists, political persons and public servants.

Canberra was created as a solution to Australia’s 2 largest cities squabbling over the right to become the national capital. The Limestone Plains region in New South Wales was chosen as the site for present day Canberra. It was a good choice for nature lovers as it is surrounded by bushland, mountain ranges and, more recently, wineries.

The National Gallery, National Museum and National Library of Australia highlight Canberra’s cultural riches. Other notable institutions to visit are the High Court of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive that stockpiles a collection of Australia’s early radio, television and film history.

The military also plays a significant role here with many training facilities for the army such as the Australian Defence Force Academy. An unforgettable experience is attending the Anzac Day Dawn service at The Australian War Memorial.

Australia’s cultural capital with a political punch has many hotels, motels and apartments on Melbourne Tourism for that city trip, business jaunt or family holiday.

We are frequent visitors to Canberra as there is just so much to see and do. Unfortunately, this last trip we were just passing through - but will be back again for our next visit soon. Our favorite spots include the Film and Sound Archives, the Museum and the Arboretum. But there is also so much more! We love the New Year fireworks, and other great events. The parks and gardens, walking and bike tracks, and of course the shopping! It's always easy to find great food in Canberra - and we love to seek out new places we haven't tried! Well worth a visit.

I went there to tend to an elderly parent in aged care, so I did not do any sightseeing. I gave up on public transport and used DiDi which mostly worked well. Better eat early as the place becomes a ghost town around 9-10pm. I went to Maccas when it was open, and to San Churro which was open late. The places inside the shopping centre (Canberra Centre) were not open early. Quite a few restaurants and cafes were good and provided nice food items. I really would not go to the Civic area, it is a bit of a ghetto with lots of graffiti and empty shops. It is a sterile no character place.

10 Comfortable city with great museums and culture.
Comfortable city with great museums and culture. Art gallery has been fabulous but has been neglected of late and is undergoing much work, reducing its appeal. Lovely botanical garden and generally good-looking city. Manuka is worth a visit for cafes and restaurants. Downtown area lacks focus but has good facilities.

Canberra has interesting museums, but it is so spread out that it is very difficult to visit without use of a car. We rented bikes one afternoon and were able to ride around the beautiful Burleigh-Griffith Lake and around the parliament area. We walked to the War Memorial, which is a really interesting, interactive museum, close to the Mercure hotel. We loved Smith’s Alternative, a intimate bar and concert venue in the Melbourne Building. We saw a concert with Felicity Dowd and Isabel Rumble. The venue was perfect and the staff are so kind and helpful. We also enjoyed eating at the Asian-fusion restaurant, Chop Chop in the Melbourne Building.

10 Canberra is a very easy city to explore with little traffic.
Canberra is a very easy city to explore with little traffic. Many excellent art galleries and museums with important collections and displays. National Museum’s indigenous display is terrific. National Art Gallery’s sculpture garden is lovely on a hot day with Nakaya’s Fog Garden. Lots of terrific walks around the lake and tree lined streets.

Big comfy bed, excellent hot shower and the complimentary mini-bar all went down a real treat. Great block out curtains kept the room dark; one time we didn't even realise it was a sunny morning. The staff who came to make up our room and re-fill the mini-bar were very courteous and great to deal with (whereas the staff during check-in appeared distracted). The hotel is in a very convenient location to Canberra's night-time venues with a short walk to restaurants or a bit further to the theatre and museum/gallery.

Hotel has fantastic art deco era ambience. It is spacious which lovely grounds and the rooms are large and well appointed. I think it is Canberras oldest hotel and moderately expensive. Location is the best if you want ot visit the parliamentary zone. Hotel staff helped to clean up my car after the window was broken by a robber during the night. The room has a full sized bath!

Apartment was spacious, well appointed and comfortable. Beds were comfortable and the kids were given little gift bags on arrival which was a wonderful touch. It was quick and easy to check in and the staff were very friendly. The hotel itself was very close to restaurants and other sights which was great and had easy to access secure parking during our stay.

The location is fantastic, so close to the city centre and all the shops, as well as Braddon with all it's restaurants and cafes. We could walk to dinner or the shops and the hotel is on the main road through Canberra, so it's handy to get anywhere you need to. Our room was large, plenty of space, also clean and tidy with a fully stocked kitchen.

The hotel is centrally located on Northbourne Avenue, so it depends on what you intend to do when you are in Canberra. This is a basic hotel if you want somewhere to sleep and shower and to eat simply. It is probably suitable for families, and the hotel does have a bar, gym and pool. Our room was quiet, and we heard no traffic noise.

I stay at the Mecure Canberra regularly when visiting Govt clients nearby. I know what to expect here. While the property is rather tired and could do with a refurb, the rooms are spacious with room to work of an evening. Pricing can vary greatly as with all Canberra hotels depending on what is going that week so book early.
